Sovereign Source: Principles and Purpose
Sovereign Source is a research initiative exploring how AI can respect the people and communities whose knowledge makes it useful. Its guiding idea is that progress in machine capability should create greater opportunity for humans, including those who discover, explain, document and improve the world.
The public vision rests on three principles:
- Permission: people and organizations should understand and agree to the uses of material they are authorized to provide.
- Attribution: useful contributions and documented influences deserve accurate recognition, with clear limits on what the available evidence can establish.
- Contributor rewards: accepted agreements can give participants a way to share in the value their contributions help create.
Super Intellectual Property is the project’s term for this broader discussion of works, ideas, contributions and influences. It does not turn every idea into exclusive property or replace existing legal rights. Credit, permission and payment remain distinct. Acknowledging an influence is different from proving ownership, and a record that material was used in training does not reveal its exact causal contribution to every answer.
Participation should be voluntary and understandable. Communities should be able to represent their interests while preserving individual choice and recognition. Existing open licenses and public-domain freedoms should remain respected.
Content rewards are one possible way to support continuing knowledge creation. Whether they improve data quality, customer value or commercial sustainability must be established with evidence. The public articles explore those possibilities without presenting them as measured results from an operating Sovereign Source service.
The project is at the research stage. It does not currently provide a production model or an operating contributor-payment service.
